Product Appearance:

• Color: Clear to pale greenish-yellow liquid.
• Odor: Sharp, fresh, and energetic citrus scent; identical to fresh lemon rinds.
• Texture: Very thin, watery viscosity; non-oily and highly volatile.

Product Solubility: Fully soluble in cosmetic oils and high-proof alcohol; insoluble in water.

Possible Usage Rate:

• Wash-off Products (Soaps/Cleansers): 0.5% – 2%
• Leave-on Body Products: 0.1% – 0.5% (see Safety Guidelines)
• Household/Aromatherapy: 1% – 5%
• Direct Application: Prohibited. Must be heavily diluted.

pH Range: Not applicable as it is an anhydrous essential oil.

Product Description

Lemon essential oil is cold-pressed from the fresh peels of Citrus limon. It is a powerful “active” oil rich in Limonene, a terpene known for its potent antioxidant and skin-cleansing properties. It acts as a natural astringent and tonic, making it highly effective for balancing oily complexions, shrinking the appearance of pores, and brightening dull skin. Its ability to break down wax and oil makes it an excellent addition to clarifying cleansers and scalp treatments. Beyond its physical benefits, the high citral content provides a stimulating aromatherapeutic effect, scientifically shown to enhance mood and cognitive alertness. In skincare, it is often used to improve the clarity and radiance of the skin, though its potency requires careful handling and precise dosing to avoid irritation.

Possible Uses/Applications:

• Skin Brightening Masks: Helping to even out skin tone and restore a natural glow.
• Purifying Hand Cleansers: Providing natural antiseptic benefits and a fresh, clean scent.
• Oily Scalp Treatments: Helping to break down excess sebum and buildup at the roots.
• Nail Hardening Soaks: Used to brighten yellowed nails and strengthen the nail bed.

Formulation Guidelines

• Lemon oil is extremely volatile and heat-sensitive; it must be added during the cool-down phase (below 35°C–40°C) to prevent the scent and therapeutic properties from evaporating.
• It is highly prone to oxidation, which increases its potential to cause skin irritation.
• Always include an antioxidant like Vitamin E (Tocopherol) in your oil-based formulas to stabilize the limonene.
• In emulsions, lemon oil can sometimes affect the stability of certain thickeners, so it should be incorporated slowly.

Safety Guidelines

• Photosensitivity: Lemon oil is phototoxic. When used in leave-on products, it can cause severe skin irritation or blistering if the skin is exposed to sunlight. Use “Steam Distilled” or “FCF” (Furocoumarin-free) lemon oil if sun exposure is expected.
• Dilution Required: Never apply neat to the skin; it is a strong sensitizer.
• Storage: Extremely prone to oxidation. Store in a dark amber glass bottle in a cold environment (ideally a refrigerator) to extend its short 6–12-month shelf life.
• Topical Use Only: Do not ingest. Keep away from the eyes and mucous membranes.
