Product Description

Tea tree oil is steam-distilled from the leaves of the Melaleuca alternifolia tree, native to Australia. It is globally renowned for its high concentration of Terpinen-4-ol, a compound with exceptional broad-spectrum antimicrobial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties. Unlike many harsh synthetic treatments, tea tree oil can effectively neutralize acne-causing bacteria (P. acnes) without stripping the skin’s protective barrier when used at appropriate dilutions. It is a staple in scalp care for treating seborrheic dermatitis (dandruff) and is frequently used in foot care to combat fungal infections like athlete’s foot. Its ability to penetrate the pores and dissolve sebum makes it an ideal clarifying agent for oily and congested skin types. Beyond its medicinal uses, its crisp, clean scent provides a refreshing aromatherapeutic benefit, often associated with purity and healing.

Possible Uses/Applications:

  • Spot Treatments: Targeting active blemishes and reducing the appearance of redness.
  • Deodorizing Body Washes: Providing natural antibacterial protection for long-lasting freshness.
  • Antiseptic Hand Salves: Protecting and repairing hard-working hands prone to small nicks.
  • Scalp Clarifiers: Helping to manage dandruff and maintain a balanced scalp microbiome.

Formulation Guidelines

Tea tree oil is highly volatile and sensitive to oxidation. It must be added during the cool-down phase (below 40°C) to prevent the degradation of its active terpenes. Because it can be drying, it is best formulated alongside soothing carrier oils like Jojoba or Aloe Vera Oil. In emulsions, it acts as a natural preservative booster, though it should not replace a broad-spectrum preservative system. To prevent the formation of irritating oxidation products (like p-cymene), always include an antioxidant like Vitamin E (Tocopherol) at 0.2%–0.5% and ensure the final product is housed in UV-protective packaging.

Safety Guidelines

  • Topical Use Only: Highly toxic if ingested. Keep away from pets, especially cats and dogs, as it is neurotoxic to them.
  • Skin Sensitization: Oxidized tea tree oil is a frequent cause of contact dermatitis. Always check that the oil is fresh and has been stored correctly.
  • Dilution Required: For general facial use, keep concentrations below 5% to avoid chemical burns or severe dryness.
  • Storage: Store in a cool, dark place in an airtight amber glass bottle. Use within 12 months of opening for peak safety and efficacy.
