Product Solubility: Fully soluble in cosmetic oils and organic solvents; insoluble in water.

Product Description

Neem oil is a cold-pressed vegetable oil extracted from the fruits and seeds of the Azadirachta indica tree, native to the Indian subcontinent. It is a cornerstone of Ayurvedic medicine, primarily valued for its exceptionally high concentration of Azadirachtin, a complex triterpenoid that provides potent antifungal, antibacterial, and insect-repellent properties. This oil is a “medicinal” powerhouse, rich in fatty acids like oleic and stearic acid, alongside limonoids that help suppress inflammatory responses. It is specifically utilized in skincare for treating chronic conditions such as acne, psoriasis, and fungal infections, acting as a natural disinfectant while providing deep emolliency. In hair care, neem oil is highly effective at eliminating dandruff-causing fungi and soothing itchy, inflamed scalps. Because of its intense scent and high potency, it is rarely used as a base oil but serves as a functional active ingredient that provides a protective shield for the skin’s microbiome.

Formulation Guidelines

• Neem oil is heat-sensitive and should be incorporated during the cool-down phase (below 40°C) to maintain the integrity of the bioactive azadirachtin.
• If the oil has solidified in the bottle, warm it gently in a warm water bath before mixing.
• Due to its strong and lingering scent, it is often blended with powerful essential oils to mask the aroma in finished products.
• In emulsions, it provides a very rich, occlusive feel.
• To ensure stability and prevent the oxidation of its heavy fatty acids, always include an antioxidant like Vitamin E (Tocopherol) at 0.2%–0.5%.

Safety Guidelines

• Intended for external use; do not ingest as it can be toxic in small doses, especially for children.
• Historically, neem has been associated with contraceptive effects; it is generally advised to avoid use during pregnancy or when trying to conceive.
• Store in a cool, dark place. Its natural antibacterial properties give it a relatively long shelf life of 12–18 months.
