Product Description

Clove oil is steam-distilled from the dried flower buds of the Syzygium aromaticum tree. It is chemically dominated by Eugenol (up to 85%), a powerful compound renowned for its exceptional analgesic (pain-relieving), antiseptic, and antioxidant properties. In skincare, it is utilized for its potent antimicrobial action to combat acne-causing bacteria and its ability to stimulate blood flow, which can revitalize the appearance of the skin. It is a “hot” oil, traditionally used in muscle rubs to provide deep, warming relief to tired limbs and in oral care for its numbing effect on gums. Beyond its functional benefits, the high antioxidant capacity of clove oil helps protect formulations from oxidative stress. Its spicy, familiar scent is also used in aromatherapy to provide a sense of grounding and emotional fortifying.

Possible Uses/Applications:

  • Warming Body Balms: Providing a gentle heat sensation to soothe localized discomfort.
  • Antibacterial Foot Creams: Helping to eliminate odor-causing bacteria and fungi.
  • Plumping Lip Treatments: Used at very low percentages to increase circulation for a fuller look.
  • Oral Care Additives: Historically used in dental-focused balms for its numbing and antiseptic qualities.

Formulation Guidelines

  • Clove oil is extremely potent and must be handled with precision.
  • It must be added during the cool-down phase (below 40°C) to prevent the evaporation of eugenol and other volatile constituents.
  • Due to its high reactivity and potential to cause skin sensitization, it must be kept at very low concentrations in leave-on formulas.
  • In emulsions, it should be pre-dispersed in a carrier oil before being added to the batch.
  • It is highly recommended to pair Clove oil with an antioxidant like Vitamin E (Tocopherol) at 0.2% to protect both the essential oil and the carrier oils from degradation.

Safety Guidelines

  • Extreme Skin Irritant: Never use undiluted. It can cause severe chemical burns or sensitization if used above the recommended dermal limits.
  • Dermal Limit: IFRA guidelines suggest a maximum concentration of 0.1% for leave-on products to avoid skin reactions.
  • Medical Precautions: Avoid use on children, during pregnancy, or on individuals with sensitive or damaged skin. It may interfere with blood-clotting medications.
  • Storage: Store in a cool, dark place in amber glass. It is susceptible to oxidation, which increases its skin-sensitizing properties.
